Issa López returns as showrunner, writer, and director for Season 5 following her work on the Alaska-set fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. HBO picked up the fifth season in February 2024 following the show’s fourth season, which drew 12.7 million cross-platform viewers. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto created the franchise in 2014, with each season telling a new story with a new cast.
Production Schedule and Creative Team
Production on the new episodes will commence in 2027. López serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Nicolas Cage, Antonio Banderas, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Woody Harrelson, and Matthew McConaughey.
Speculation regarding the casting had circulated prior to the official announcement. Cage discussed his upcoming television commitments during an appearance at New York Comic Con, noting that scheduling allowed him to take on the project. Cage’s involvement follows his work on Spider-Noir, which was canceled after one season.
Prior Seasons and Recent Credits
The anthology format has paired different lead actors across four previous seasons. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson starred in the Louisiana-set first season, followed by Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn in California for Season 2, and Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff in the Ozarks for Season 3. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis led Season 4 in Alaska.
Banderas enters the series following recent film credits including the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony and Babygirl. Cage’s recent credits include Pig, Dream Scenario, and Leaving Las Vegas.
