Nigeria Confirms First Ebola Case in Abuja Linked to Uganda Travel

She is in isolation and receiving good care, Muhammad Ali Pate said in a television interview regarding a patient who tested positive for the Ebola virus in the capital city of Abuja.

Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola infection linked to the ongoing outbreak in Central Africa. The patient is a Nigerian woman who recently traveled to Uganda and began showing symptoms on October 7. Health authorities in Uganda had declared their country Ebola-free at the end of July following a previous cluster of 20 cases, which largely involved individuals from the Democratic Republic of Congo seeking medical assistance.

Health officials monitor 44 contacts of infected traveler

Following the confirmation of the infection, health officials initiated comprehensive tracing protocols. Minister Pate stated that 44 individuals who had contact with the patient have been identified and are currently being monitored.

The infected traveler initially sought treatment at a private clinic before her condition worsened and laboratory tests confirmed the diagnosis. Health teams are actively tracking the movements of healthcare workers, caregivers, and fellow travelers who interacted with the patient to prevent further transmission.

Central African outbreak causes thousands of deaths

The wider Central African outbreak remains centered in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where authorities have recorded more than 9,500 infections and over 4,600 deaths since mid-May. Neighboring Uganda has also reported cases, alongside travel-associated infections identified in Kenya and France.

Public health officials emphasize that rapid detection and isolation remain critical in containing the spread of the virus. Nigeria previously experienced an Ebola case in Lagos in 2014, making this the first detected case in the country since that year.
