Researchers at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin found that individuals with irregular shift schedules face a distinct vulnerability to persistent post-COVID symptoms, highlighting how circadian disruption impacts immune recovery.

Circadian Disruption and Long COVID Risk

The study analyzed data from the UK Biobank, examining employment and health records for thousands of participants. According to the findings led by the Berlin research team, people engaged in night shift work show a notably higher incidence of long COVID compared to day workers. Chronic disruption of the body’s internal biological clock impairs immune function and inflammatory responses, which researchers identify as a key mechanism driving prolonged viral recovery.

Night shifts force the body to operate against its natural circadian rhythm. This biological mismatch suppresses melatonin production and alters cortisol rhythms, both of which play vital roles in regulating inflammation. When a circadian-disrupted worker contracts SARS-CoV-2, their immune system struggles to downregulate post-viral inflammation efficiently, increasing the likelihood of enduring fatigue, neurological issues, and respiratory complications.

Occupational Vulnerability in Healthcare and Essential Services

Shift work is heavily concentrated in essential sectors, including healthcare, transportation, and public safety. According to public health data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, essential workers experienced higher rates of initial SARS-CoV-2 exposure during the pandemic. The new iScience data adds a physiological layer to this occupational hazard, showing that the timing of work schedule is an independent biological risk factor for long-term morbidity.

Medical experts emphasize that understanding this vulnerability requires a shift in how occupational health views shift work. Mitigating these risks involves targeted workplace interventions, such as optimizing shift rotations, allowing adequate recovery days between night shifts, and providing enhanced post-infection monitoring for night-shift employees.
