Nikkei Falls as Chip Stocks Slide Ahead of Nvidia Earnings

Tokyo stocks retreated on Tuesday, tracking a broader pullback in U.S. technology shares as investors exercise caution ahead of critical quarterly earnings from chip manufacturer Nvidia. According to market data from the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the benchmark Nikkei index dropped 0.5% to close at 65,197.7 by 0146 GMT, while the broader Topix index edged up a slight 0.06% to 4,075.83.

Nvidia Earnings Cast Shadow Over Global Semiconductor Sector

Global semiconductor equities faced downward pressure following Wall Street’s tech-led decline on Monday. Investors are reassessing high market valuations and bracing for Nvidia’s financial report, which is widely viewed by analysts as a primary market catalyst. Any indication of slowing growth could reignite valuation concerns across the sector, according to market analyses. Nvidia shares have slid for seven consecutive sessions.

Japanese chip-related shares mirrored the downturn. Advantest, a major manufacturer of chip-testing equipment, fell 3.33%, while Tokyo Electron dropped 1.03%. Memory chip maker Kioxia saw its shares decline by 1.37%. Shuutarou Yasuda, a market analyst at Tokai Tokyo Intelligence Laboratory, noted that sliding shares at Samsung Electronics also weighed heavily on Japanese semiconductor names. Samsung closed down 3.5% on Tuesday following an 8.70% plunge in the previous session, after its record shareholder return plan of tens of billions of dollars disappointed investors.

Shipping and Fiber Optics Defy Market Downturn

While technology issues struggled, yield-oriented equities and select industrial suppliers posted strong gains on the Tokyo exchange. According to Shuutarou Yasuda of Tokai Tokyo Intelligence Laboratory, yield-oriented equities are displaying resilience, particularly shipping companies that typically attract investment during periods of escalating geopolitical tension in the Middle East.

The marine transportation sub-index jumped 2.91%, finishing as the top performer among the 33 industry sectors tracked by the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Fiber optic cable manufacturers also surged amid the broader market caution, with Fujikura and Furukawa Electric posting respective gains of 4.15% and 6%. Across the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, 53% of listed issues advanced, 43% declined, and 3% remained unchanged.
