Mother of Nikolay Zlatkov Marks Birthday with Emotional Tribute Amidst Investigation
The mother of Nikolay Zlatkov, one of the individuals found dead near Okolchitsa Peak in Bulgaria, shared a poignant message on social media on her birthday, reflecting on her son’s memory and the pain of his loss. The post highlights the significance of the color yellow as a symbol of respect for Zlatkov and contrasts the joy of past celebrations with the emptiness of the present.
A Symbol of Respect: The Color Yellow
In her message, Zlatkov’s mother explained the meaning behind her association with the color yellow, stating, “The yellow color, for which many people spat at me, is the color of respect for my son Niki. My favorite color is yellow. And as Niki often said: ‘It’s not that I have a favorite color, but thanks to you I can say that – like it or not – my favorite is the yellow one.’” This personal connection underscores the deep bond between mother and son and her defiance against criticism regarding her choice of color to honor his memory.
Remembering Last Year’s Celebration
The birthday message draws a stark contrast between the current year’s somber mood and the warmth of last year’s celebration at the mountain lodge. She fondly recalled a gathering with Nikolay, Sasho, Ivo, Ivey, Plamen, and Decho, describing a scene filled with smiles and heartfelt wishes. “Everyone smiling. Everyone welcoming me with warm hugs and meaningful wishes,” she wrote.
Moments of Joy and Shared Memories
The mother reminisced about the joyful moments shared with her son, including his culinary efforts and the spontaneous visits from friends. “Nicky had been cooking all day. Five-six different dishes. And, of course, my favorite tinsel,” she recalled. She also shared a humorous anecdote about his unique “popsicle ice cream” made of lard and meat, which he jokingly enjoyed because no one else liked it.
A Lasting Connection
The post also reflects on the intimate conversations she shared with her son. “It was just Nikki and I. As always – late into the night. We talked about everything. We never got to talk each other down,” she added, highlighting their close relationship and the comfort they found in each other’s company.
A Mother’s Pride
Concluding her message, the mother expressed her pride in her son, describing him as “extraordinary… strong, masculine, honest and dignified in every way. Gifted with intelligence and abilities that few people possess. With a brave heart, ready to fight for truth and freedom to the end! And with such a gentle soul that he gave a hand to anyone in need – even those who didn’t deserve it.”
Ongoing Investigation
Nikolay Zlatkov was among six individuals found dead in the Petrohan area and near Okolchitsa Peak in February 2026. Ralitsa Asenova, Zlatkov’s mother, has publicly rejected theories of suicide, suggesting the deaths were the result of professional killings. Authorities are investigating a private organization linked to Ivaylo Kalushev, who was also among the deceased, amid allegations of “cult-like” behavior and potential child exploitation. The investigation is examining complaints dating back to 2022, including threats and irregularities in agreements with the Ministry of Environment and Water.
