Nintendo responds to Censorship Concerns in ‘Dispatch‘ on Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo has officially addressed the controversy surrounding censorship in the game Dispatch on Nintendo Switch and the forthcoming Switch 2. Players discovered that the game features persistent, unremovable black squares covering characters’ nudity, a stark contrast to the PC and PlayStation 5 versions were censorship can be toggled off.
According to a company representative, Nintendo mandates that all titles on its platforms receive ratings from independent organizations and comply wiht established content guidelines. Nintendo communicates any inconsistencies to developers but maintains it does not independently alter game content or reveal specific evaluation criteria.
AdHoc Studio, the developers of Dispatch, have confirmed that the Switch and Switch 2 versions were subjected to enforced censorship. The issue stems from Japan’s Computer Entertainment Rating Institution (CERO) ratings system, which has strict requirements regarding nudity. To streamline development and resource allocation, the studio implemented a single, universally censored version for both Switch platforms.
This situation has ignited debate among gamers regarding Nintendo’s content policies, particularly considering the availability of other mature-rated games on the Nintendo eShop. The enforced censorship in Dispatch raises questions about consistency in Nintendo’s application of content guidelines across its platforms.
