Nintendo Hikes Switch 2 Prices as Memory Chip Costs Surge
Nintendo is raising the retail price of its Switch 2 gaming console globally, a move driven by soaring costs for essential memory chips. The price adjustment comes as the Japanese gaming giant issues a stark warning to investors: net profits are expected to plunge by 27% this year.
The price hikes will roll out in phases across major markets. In Japan, the cost of the Switch 2 will rise by 20% starting May 25. European consumers will see a 6% increase, bringing the price to 499.99 euros. In the United States, the price will climb by 11% to $499.99, effective September 1.
Financial Outlook: A Significant Profit Slide
The hardware price increase hasn’t shielded Nintendo from a challenging financial forecast. For the fiscal year ending next March, Nintendo expects net profit to drop 27% to 310 billion yen (approximately $1.98 billion). This coincides with a projected 11.4% decline in sales, which are expected to hit 2.05 trillion yen.
Nintendo’s operating profit forecast of 370 billion yen also fell considerably short of the 480 billion yen average estimate projected by analysts via Bloomberg News. This downturn follows a period of explosive growth; last year, the company saw net profit surge 52% to 424 billion yen on annual sales of 2.31 trillion yen.

This inflation is largely fueled by the artificial intelligence boom, which has created unprecedented demand for high-end chips across gaming consoles, smartphones, and data centers. Supply chain pressures have been further exacerbated by disruptions linked to the Iran war.
Despite these headwinds, the Switch 2 had a strong debut. Launched in June, the console sold 19.86 million units by March, bolstered by the release of hit titles including Pokemon Pokopia, Mario Kart World, and Donkey Kong Bananza.
Industry Comparison: Nintendo vs. Sony
Nintendo isn’t the only player feeling the squeeze. Sony has already implemented price increases for the PlayStation 5. However, Sony remains more optimistic about its financial trajectory, projecting a 13% rise in income despite falling sales of its aging hardware. Sony reported selling 16 million PS5 units in the last fiscal year, down from 18.5 million the previous year.
Analysts suggest Sony is better positioned to handle the chip crisis. Amir Anvarzadeh, a strategist at Asymmetric Advisors, notes that Sony’s more mature console cycle allows it to weather higher memory costs. Having moved past the initial heavy hardware penetration costs, Sony is now poised to benefit from high-margin software sales and ecosystem engagement.
Sony is also expected to benefit from the upcoming November release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Gaming industry consultant Serkan Toto told AFP that if any single game can sell PlayStations by the millions, it is this one.
The Road Ahead for Nintendo
Nintendo faces a steeper climb than its rival. According to Serkan Toto, Switch 2 customers are “especially price sensitive,” making the recent price hikes a risky maneuver. Toto also observed that the first-year game lineup for the Switch 2 is weaker than that of its predecessor.
To offset the rising cost of hardware and the projected dip in profits, the consensus among industry experts is clear: Nintendo must now “step on the gas” regarding its software strategy to maintain momentum and drive console adoption.
