Nintendo is officially ending service for the mobile racing game Mario Kart Tour on September 29 at 11pm Pacific time. After seven years of service, the company confirmed that the title will no longer be playable, and it has already suspended the sale of in-game currency and automatic renewals for the game’s “Gold Pass” subscription service. Unlike some of its other mobile titles, Nintendo has confirmed that there are no plans to release an offline version of the game.
Timeline of the Mario Kart Tour Shutdown
The decision to sunset Mario Kart Tour marks the end of one of Nintendo’s most prominent mobile experiments. According to an official notice posted by Nintendo, the game, which launched in September 2019, will cease all operations in the fall of 2023. As of September 2023, the developers disabled the ability for players to purchase rubies or renew subscriptions. Current subscribers were granted access to all Gold Pass benefits for the remainder of the game’s operational window.

Shift in Nintendo’s Mobile Strategy
Mario Kart Tour was initially defined by its "gacha" mechanics, which required players to spend currency for random chances at unlocking characters and karts. Following significant player feedback regarding these monetization practices, Nintendo overhauled the system in 2022, replacing the random pulls with a more traditional item shop.
Comparison of Nintendo’s Mobile Catalog
While some titles have been retired, others remain active under different operational frameworks:
- Mario Kart Tour: Shutting down; no offline mode available.
- Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp: Recently transitioned to a standalone offline version, which allows players to retain their data.
- Fire Emblem Heroes: Remains fully operational.
- Super Mario Run: Continues to function.
Why No Offline Version Was Released
While Nintendo provided a transition path for Pocket Camp users, it explicitly stated that no such version exists for Mario Kart Tour. Because Mario Kart Tour fed into development of tracks for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Switch expansion pass, the mobile game served as a development bridge for console content.
