BNSF and Recent Mexico DOT Project Earns Transportation Award
A grade separation project on Jarales Road near Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been recognized for its positive impact on safety and mobility. Completed a year ago, the project involved the construction of a new bridge over BNSF Railway tracks and the realignment of over half a mile of state highway. The collaboration between BNSF Railway and the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) has earned the 2026 New Mexico American Council of Engineering Companies’ Transportation Project of the Year award.
Project Details
The NM 109 Jarales Road Grade Separation Project addressed a busy crossing south of Albuquerque. Prior to the project, the corridor carried more than 1,700 vehicles daily while crossing three sets of rail tracks used by nearly 90 trains each day . Vehicles on NM 109 frequently experienced delays due to trains, some of which were as long as two miles .
Construction and Cost
