Beyond Passwords: Leveraging Built-In Tools for Secure Access
In today’s digital landscape, managing numerous online accounts necessitates juggling dozens of passwords. Relying on a single password across multiple services poses significant security risks, including data breaches and identity theft. While dedicated password management services are available, modern devices and operating systems often include robust, built-in solutions. Biometric authentication and passkeys offer increasingly secure and convenient alternatives to traditional passwords.
Password Managers are Already Baked Into Most Devices
Many users are unaware that password managers are already integrated into their devices. Apple’s iCloud Keychain securely stores and encrypts passwords across Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro. On iOS, Keychain is accessible through the “Passwords” app. This feature auto-populates usernames, passwords, and even credit card information, eliminating manual entry.
For those outside the Apple ecosystem, Windows offers Credential Manager, a similar password-saving system. Google’s Password Manager, linked to a Google account, provides access on Chrome, Android devices, and phones utilizing Google services.
While operating system-based password managers may lack the extensive cross-platform functionality of dedicated services, they offer convenience, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness for users within a specific ecosystem. For example, iCloud Keychain’s functionality is limited outside of Apple products, and Credential Manager is exclusive to Windows 10 and 11.
Passkeys and Biometrics are Also Effective Alternatives
Beyond password managers, alternative authentication methods enhance security and convenience. IPhones and iPads with Face ID or Touch ID can utilize biometric scanning to log in to saved websites via Safari. Many Android and iPhone apps also support biometric login through native facial recognition and fingerprint scanning.
Passkeys represent a significant step forward in passwordless authentication. When supported by a website or service, passkeys generate a unique “fingerprint” linked to the device, eliminating the need for a password altogether. Authentication is granted when the passkey token matches the service’s record.
Emerging technologies, such as IBM Verify, leverage artificial intelligence for identity and access management (IAM), protecting against phishing and hacking attempts. While currently limited in consumer applications, AI-driven IAM holds promise for the future of secure access.
