Noah Kahan Surprise Drops ‘The Great Divide’ Extended Version ‘The Last of the Bugs’

Less than 24 hours after the release of his highly anticipated fourth studio album, Noah Kahan surprised fans with an extended version titled The Great Divide: The Last of the Bugs. The surprise drop, announced via social media and confirmed by multiple music outlets, features four previously unreleased tracks woven into the original tracklist, expanding the album to 21 songs.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kahan chose to integrate the novel songs throughout the album rather than appending them at the finish. “Lighthouse” appears as track five, positioned between “Downfall” and “Paid Time Off.” “Staying Still” follows as track six, sitting between “Paid Time Off” and the title track “The Great Divide.” The final two additions, “A Few of Our Own” and “Orbiter,” are placed at tracks 19 and 20, respectively.

The extended album was released on April 25, 2026, just one day after the original The Great Divide debuted on April 24. Kahan described the project as a continuation of the emotional exploration begun on his breakthrough 2022 album Stick Season, telling Apple Music in an interview that The Great Divide represents “three months later” after the psychedelic clarity of Stick Season: “That was great and that was helpful, but there’s a lot more we gotta figure out still.”

Production on the extended version involved longtime collaborator Gabe Simon and new contributors including Aaron Dessner of The National, whom Kahan credited with helping him process complex emotions during the recording process. “I felt very lost and I kind of just like trauma-dumped on him and he took it so well,” Kahan said of working with Dessner.

The album’s title and thematic core stem from Kahan’s song “The View Between Villages,” with “the last of the bugs” serving as a metaphor for those who persist in seeking understanding amid emotional distance. Kahan shared that he built anticipation for the release through cryptic posts on a TikTok account named @thelastofthebugs, where he posted a short clip captioned “you weren’t supposed to find this… Only the last of the bugs ever do.”

Fans can access The Great Divide: The Last of the Bugs through major streaming platforms and Noah Kahan’s official online store, where it is available as a digital download in MP3 format at 44.1kHz/320kbps. The release remains limited to one purchase per customer through the official retailer.
