North Chungcheong Province Eyes Baseball Future with Modern Stadium and Youth Programs

North Chungcheong Province, long considered outside the heart of South Korean professional baseball, is making a concerted effort to establish itself as a baseball hub. Recent initiatives, including youth development programs and plans for a new 50,000-seat dome stadium, signal a commitment to the sport at both the grassroots and professional levels.

Revitalizing Youth Baseball

On February 21, 2026, North Chungcheong Province hosted a ‘Baseball Class for Children with Dreaming Baseball’ at the Provincial Office Culture Plaza 815. The event aimed to invigorate daily sports participation among children and cultivate young baseball talent.

Fifty-nine young players from local little league and elementary school baseball teams participated, receiving instruction from former professional baseball player and coach Jin-Woo Song, along with other professional coaches. Song, a left-handed pitcher who played in the KBO League for 43 years, emphasized the importance of fundamental skills.

Governor Kim Young-hwan expressed his support for the program, stating his hope that the class would be a valuable experience for the children, fostering their dreams, and confidence. He also pledged continued efforts to expand the base of youth sports within the province.

A Province Without a Pro Team

Currently, North Chungcheong Province is one of 17 South Korean cities and provinces without its own professional baseball team. While it previously served as a secondary home for the OB Bears and Hanwha Eagles, no games have been played in the province since last year.

Dome Stadium Plans

Governor Kim Young-hwan views 2026 as a pivotal year for North Chungcheong Province’s baseball ambitions. This optimism stems from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s announcement at the end of last year regarding plans to construct a 50,000-seat dome stadium in Osong, Cheongju. The stadium is envisioned as a multi-purpose complex capable of hosting large-scale K-content performances.

Governor Kim believes Osong, Cheongju, located in the center of the country, is the ideal location for the project, citing its alignment with national balanced development goals. The area benefits from a high-speed rail station and an international airport, ensuring accessibility for both domestic and international visitors.

North Chungcheong Province is currently developing a roadmap for the metropolitan dome stadium in the Chungcheong region.

Looking Ahead

With a focus on youth development and the potential for a state-of-the-art stadium, North Chungcheong Province is actively pursuing its goal of becoming a prominent baseball city in South Korea. The province’s efforts could bring professional baseball back to the region and provide a new home for fans and players alike.
