Coreonortean forces fired a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan on Wednesday, according to the South Korean military, marking the eleventh such weapons test by Pyongyang in 2026. The launch follows sharp diplomatic friction between North Korea and Japan over Tokyo’s defense policy and precedes major joint military exercises scheduled between Seoul and Washington.

Launch Details and Trajectory

The South Korean military announced in a statement that the military detected the launch at approximately 6:00 local time from the vicinity of Wonsan in Kangwon province. According to Seoul’s military assessments, the projectile traveled a distance exceeding 700 kilometers toward the body of water known as the East Sea in both Koreas. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stated during a press briefing that the ballistic missile reached a maximum altitude of roughly 90 kilometers. Koizumi added that authorities estimate the projectile landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Neither Seoul nor Tokyo immediately identified the exact class of the missile, noting that defense analysts were continuing to examine its flight characteristics.

Regional Diplomatic Friction

The weapons test arrived one day after North Korea’s state-run Rodong Sinmun and the Korean Central News Agency published a critical commentary by international security analyst Kang Won-chol. That article denounced Tokyo’s defense white paper, which labeled Pyongyang a grave and imminent threat to justify what the North Korean state media termed an imprudent military buildup. In response to the launch, South Korea’s National Security Office convened an emergency meeting and urged Pyongyang to immediately halt provocation acts that violate United Nations Security Council resolutions. Japanese Defense Minister Koizumi similarly condemned the test, describing it as a serious problem for the safety of Japanese citizens.

Upcoming Military Exercises

The latest launch takes place just ahead of the Ulchi Freedom Shield, a ten-day joint military exercise between South Korea and the United States scheduled to begin the following Monday. Pyongyang considers these defense drills as a rehearsal for an invasion of its territory.
