North Korea threatened to resume propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts and deploy tactical strike weapons along the heavily fortified border with South Korea, escalating tensions after last month’s landmine explosions that injured three South Korean soldiers.
Border Fortifications and Military Demarcation Line Violations
The renewed threats follow a formal accusation by South Korea earlier this month blaming North Korea for the Sept. 21 blasts at the border. Seoul urged Pyongyang to issue an apology and clear remaining explosive devices. Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, rejected responsibility for the blasts. She accused South Korea of firing warning shots and broadcasting propaganda numerous times since August under what she called an unreasonable pretext that North Korean soldiers crossed the demarcation line.
South Korea’s military reported that North Korean soldiers violated the border’s military demarcation line 50 times this year during fortification work involving the installation of mines, barbed wire fences, and anti-tank ties. In response, the South Korean military stated it fired warning shots and maintained immediate readiness to respond to the latest North Korean warning.
Recent Statements and Security Situation
On Monday, Kim Yo Jong stated that A grave situation is prevailing along the southern border due to the recalcitrant gangsters,
referring to South Korea by its official name, the Republic of Korea. She added that such provocations have gone beyond the red line
since the mine blasts. She noted that the North Korean military was considering deploying more tactical strike weapons along the southern border as a preemptive and suppressive measure to deal with contingency, and of resuming the loudspeaker
broadcasts. North Korea also warned of strong retaliation if provoked, while Kim Yo Jong accused Seoul of issuing warning broadcasts.
Past Border Crises and Psychological Warfare Tactics
The current standoff mirrors a 2015 crisis when landmine blasts attributed to North Korea maimed two South Korean soldiers and pushed the rivals to the brink of armed conflict. That escalation ended after South Korea resumed front-line loudspeaker psychological warfare campaigns for the first time in 11 years, prompting Pyongyang to halt its own broadcasts. Both Koreas have periodically used psychological warfare campaigns during past confrontations. Later, North Korea stopped its own broadcasts.
Weapons Testing and Diplomatic Strains
North Korea has recently increased weapons testing activity alongside its border fortification efforts.
