The North Korean-linked cyber-espionage group Kimsuky has built large language model tools and collected specialized software to automate cyberattacks, analyze stolen data, and generate convincing phishing campaigns, according to a report published by the South Korean cybersecurity firm Genians.
Kimsuky Builds Local AI Infrastructure for Cyberattacks
According to Genians, investigators found evidence that Kimsuky set up tools designed to run and manage artificial intelligence models locally. These tools include Ollama, GPT4All, and Msty, alongside retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) document search technology. By running models locally, operators can process stolen documents without transmitting sensitive information to external AI service providers, protecting their operational security. Genians also uncovered AI agent development frameworks, speech-to-text software, and Cursor—an AI-assisted coding tool—on infrastructure linked to the campaign.
Evolution From Phishing Lures to Malware Automation
The findings indicate that Kimsuky is moving past basic generative AI usage for phishing lures and building the capacity to integrate AI models directly into malware development, data analysis, and attack automation, as reported by Genians. Alongside these development tools, the firm discovered finance and cryptocurrency-themed decoy documents generated with artificial intelligence. These materials were crafted to mimic legitimate investment reports and workplace files. While the cybersecurity company’s findings have not been independently verified, they highlight a growing technological shift in state-backed cyber operations.

North Korea has deployed state-linked cyber units for espionage, financial theft, and revenue generation over many years, according to assessments from United States and South Korean authorities, as well as independent cybersecurity experts.
