Nintendo’s re-release of the Virtual Boy’s game library for the Nintendo Switch 2 has been met with enthusiasm from gamers worldwide, but Norwegian enthusiasts are facing a frustrating exclusion. The necessary accessory to experience the games in stereoscopic 3D is currently unavailable for purchase in Norway, leaving dedicated fans unable to fully enjoy the retro revival.

Frustration Among Norwegian Gamers

Frank Eivind Rundholt, a passionate retro gaming enthusiast, has been attempting to ascertain the reason for this exclusion from Nintendo’s European support system. His efforts have been met with a frustrating cycle of being redirected between Bergsala in Norway, the Swedish head office, and Nintendo Europe in Germany, without receiving a clear explanation. “I find it incredibly annoying not to have the option to buy the additional equipment to be able to play Virtual Boy on the Nintendo Switch,” Rundholt stated in a post on his blog, Retrospilling.no.

A Complex Distribution Network

Rundholt’s investigation revealed a lack of clear responsibility for the distribution restrictions. He was repeatedly directed back and forth between Nintendo’s various European branches, with each representative offering only a generic “Sorry, we don’t ship to your country” response, devoid of further explanation. The situation is further complicated by the fact that Nintendo ships the Virtual Boy accessory to other countries outside the European Union, such as Liechtenstein and Andorra.

Accessibility Concerns and Potential Solutions

Rundholt points out that Nintendo could easily address the accessibility issue by offering a standard, full-screen viewing mode for the Virtual Boy games on the Nintendo Switch 2. “It would have been zero problem for Nintendo to run Virtual Boy in full screen on the Nintendo Switch. All of their promo videos are in full screen. So it is entirely possible,” he argues.

Broader Availability Issues

The Virtual Boy accessory is not the only product experiencing limited availability through the My Nintendo Store. Reproductions of NES, SNES, and GameCube controllers, along with various toys and accessories, are likewise unavailable to Norwegian customers. As of February 26, 2026, Bergsala, Nintendo’s official importer in Norway, has not responded to inquiries regarding these restrictions.
