Convicted British double murderer and serial killer John Sweeney died in prison on August 14 at the age of 69, according to reports from the BBC and other outlets. Sweeney was serving a whole-life sentence at HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire for the gruesome killings and dismemberment of two former girlfriends, Paula Fields and Melissa Halstead.
Crimes and Conviction of John Sweeney
Sweeney was convicted in 2011 for the murders of Melissa Halstead and Paula Fields, whose dismembered remains were recovered years apart from European waterways. According to BBC reporting, Halstead, a 33-year-old American woman, was killed in 1990, and her body parts were discovered in a canal in Rotterdam, Netherlands, though she remained unidentified for 18 years. Fields, 31, was killed in London; police found parts of her body in six holdalls floating in Regent’s Canal in Camden in February 2001. Her head, hands, and feet were never recovered, leaving investigators searching for answers about their location.
Following his arrest and trial, trial judges handed down a whole-life tariff, ensuring Sweeney would die behind bars. Law enforcement officials investigating his north London home uncovered hundreds of violent paintings and poems, including artwork depicting a bloodied axe and references to himself as the “Scalp Hunter,” according to the BBC. Police long suspected he may have murdered other former partners who vanished over the decades.
Prior Attacks and Ongoing Prison Investigation
Before his murder convictions, Sweeney was imprisoned for attempting to murder another former girlfriend, Delia Balmer, in a brutal 1994 axe attack in north London.
