Five Performances Open at PalaRescifina as the Popular Production Arrives in Messina
More than 550,000 tickets have been sold for the Italian tour of Notre Dame de Paris, which opened its Messina engagement with five scheduled performances at the PalaRescifina, messinaindiretta.it reported. The production runs from October 22 through October 25, bringing Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel to the Sicilian stage following a run of more than 200 previous tour dates. Tickets remain available online through TicketOne, authorized ticket sellers, and the PalaRescifina box office.
The staging schedule at the Messina arena comprises evening performances at 9:00 PM on Thursday and Friday, a split schedule on Saturday with shows at 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM, and a final matinee on Sunday at 5:00 PM, according to messinaindiretta.it. Promoted locally by Giuseppe Rapisarda Management in cooperation with the Municipality of Messina, the current tour returns a production that has outpaced many major pop and rock concerts in attendance since its initial Italian premiere in 2002, messinatoday.it reported.
Original Cast Members Return for the Sicilian Dates
The Palarescifina staging features the return of several principal performers from the show’s original 2002 cast, messinatoday.it reported. Giò Di Tonno stars as Quasimodo alongside Elhaida Dani as Esmeralda, Vittorio Matteucci as Frollo, Graziano Galatone as Febo, and Camilla Rinaldi as Fiordaliso. The musical score is composed by Riccardo Cocciante, paired with an Italian lyrical adaptation by Pasquale Panella from Luc Plamondon’s original French libretto.

The production relies on a physical staging style that fuses traditional theatrical ballet with breakdance elements. The narrative centers on the marginalized bell-ringer Quasimodo and his doomed devotion to the gypsy dancer Esmeralda, set against the backdrop of medieval Paris and its governing cathedral. Producers emphasize that the underlying themes of social exclusion, institutional prejudice, and the pursuit of justice mirror contemporary societal debates just as they did in Victor Hugo’s era.
Musical Reaches 18 Million Theatergoers Before 2027 Anniversary
Since its Italian debut, the production has expanded far beyond its original boundaries. According to data reported by messinaindiretta.it, the Italian leg alone has drawn approximately 4.5 million spectators across 49 cities through more than 1,500 total performances. Globally, the musical has been translated into nine languages and staged more than 5,650 times across 24 countries, pulling in roughly 18 million theatergoers.

The current tour serves as a runway toward the production’s twenty-fifth anniversary. In 2027, the Italian version will officially mark a quarter-century since its opening run at the GranTeatro in Rome—a venue constructed specifically to house the massive technical demands of the original David Zard production. Composer Riccardo Cocciante splits his time between the musical’s ongoing touring schedule and his 2026 solo concert series, Io… Riccardo Cocciante, which celebrates five decades of songwriting and coincides with his recent album release, Ho vent’anni con te.
