Long Island Doctor and Son Charged in Alleged Pill Mill Operation
A father-son duo on Long Island, New York, have been accused of operating an illegal pill mill, distributing prescriptions for controlled substances without legitimate medical purpose, Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
Dr. Richard Taubman, 71 and his son, Eric Taubman, 33, face multiple felony counts, including criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance, attempted criminal sale of a prescription, and conspiracy. The charges stem from allegations that they sold prescriptions for opioids, amphetamines, and benzodiazepines.
Details of the Alleged Scheme
According to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office, the Taubmans allegedly operated a “family-run distribution hub” for controlled substances. Donnelly stated that the pair allegedly treated the prescribing of these high-potency drugs as “casual favors for friends,” demonstrating a disregard for the ongoing substance abuse crisis and betraying the community’s trust.
The investigation was triggered by concerns raised by pharmacists in Queens, who reported a high volume of prescriptions for controlled substances written by Dr. Taubman. Dr. Taubman, a retired OB-GYN, had resumed practice at a weight loss center in 2022. His authorization to prescribe controlled substances had previously been revoked, according to court documents.
Joint Investigation and Evidence
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office conducted a joint investigation, involving interviews, pharmacy record reviews, and other evidence gathering. The investigation spanned several months.
Potential Penalties
If convicted, the Taubmans face significant penalties, though specific sentencing details were not immediately available. The charges carry the potential for lengthy prison sentences.
Ongoing Commitment to Combatting the Crisis
District Attorney Donnelly emphasized her office’s commitment to holding accountable individuals who prioritize profit over public health and safety. She thanked the DEA for their collaboration in shutting down the alleged operation.
