NY State Police Increase Security After Iran Military Action

NYPD and State Police Increase Security Across New York Following Iran Strikes

New Yorkers awoke Saturday to heightened security measures following coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel against targets in Iran. Both the New York Police Department (NYPD) and New York State Police have announced increased patrols at sensitive locations throughout the state, citing an abundance of caution in response to the escalating tensions in the Middle East.

NYPD Enhances Patrols at Key Sites

The NYPD stated it is closely monitoring events in Iran and the broader Middle East, coordinating with federal and international partners. As a precaution, the department is enhancing patrols at diplomatic missions, cultural centers, religious institutions, and other potentially relevant sites. This is part of the NYPD’s standard protocol during periods of heightened global tension. FOX 5 New York and International Business Times reported on the increased NYPD presence.

Police are urging New Yorkers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity by calling 1-888-NYC-SAFE or 911.

State Police Bolster Security Statewide

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that New York State Police are also stepping up their presence at religious, diplomatic, and cultural sites across the state. Syracuse.com reported that while there are no specific credible threats at this time, the state’s top priority is keeping New Yorkers safe.

The State Police have begun proactive outreach to religious organizations to ensure they have support and direct points of contact.

No Credible Threats, But Vigilance Remains Key

Despite the increased security measures, authorities emphasize that there are currently no specific, credible threats to New York. However, both the NYPD and State Police are vigorously monitoring the situation and remain prepared to respond as needed. Gothamist noted that New York City is a potential target due to its dense population and status as a financial and media hub, as well as being the location of the United Nations headquarters.

Mayor Mamdani’s Response

Mayor Zohran Mamdani decried the attacks as “a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression,” while also stating his focus is on ensuring the safety of all New Yorkers. He is in contact with police and emergency management officials, according to Gothamist.

Authorities are asking all New Yorkers to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
