Northeast United States Paralyzed by Historic Snowstorm

A powerful winter storm, described as a “bomb cyclone,” has brought the Northeastern United States to a standstill, causing widespread travel disruptions, power outages, and school closures. The storm dumped heavy snowfall – exceeding 70 cm in some areas – and brought blizzard conditions with wind gusts up to 55 mph.

Storm Impacts: Travel Chaos and Power Outages

Over 10,000 flights have been canceled across the Northeastern region, with Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport experiencing the most significant disruptions. Rail connections between Latest York City and Boston were likewise suspended.

More than 600,000 people lost power along the East Coast, particularly in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Delaware, and Long Island. The outages were primarily caused by trees felled by strong winds severing power lines.

New York City Under Siege

New York City was particularly hard hit, receiving between 16 and 19 inches of snow, with an additional 1.5 to 2.3 inches expected. While the city’s traffic ban has been lifted, treacherous road conditions persist. Mayor Mamdani urged residents to stay home if possible, advising those who must drive to proceed with caution.

The United Nations headquarters, known as the Glass Palace, was closed. Bus services were suspended in many areas, and schools and thousands of businesses remained shuttered.

Regional Scope of the Storm

The weather alert covered over 40 million people from Pennsylvania to Maine. Beyond New York, Boston, Delaware, and Connecticut were also significantly impacted, experiencing disruptions to electricity and transportation networks.

Recovery and Future Outlook

Conditions are not expected to improve immediately, with a gradual recovery anticipated to begin on Tuesday, February 24th. The storm impacted the nine states that make up the Northeast region: Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine [1].
