Ignited Devices Thrown During Protests Near NYC Mayor’s Residence

New York City police detained two individuals after ignited devices were thrown during protests outside Gracie Mansion, the official residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, on Saturday. The incident occurred amidst demonstrations involving opposing groups, raising concerns about escalating tensions and public safety.

Details of the Incident

According to New York City Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the incident unfolded as two protests were underway at approximately 11 a.m. Local time. One protest, organized by conservative influencer Jake Lang, was titled “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City” and drew around 20 demonstrators. A larger counterprotest, “Drive the Nazis Out of New York,” attracted approximately 125 participants at its peak. Police had separated the groups into designated areas.

The situation escalated when a protester from Lang’s group deployed pepper spray against counterprotesters, leading to one detention. Shortly after, a counterprotester threw an ignited device toward the opposing protest area. Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke before the device struck a barrier near police officers and extinguished itself.

The same individual then received a second device from another person and dropped it near Lang’s group. Both individuals involved in throwing the devices were subsequently detained by police.

The Devices

Commissioner Tisch described the devices as being smaller than a football and wrapped in black tape. They contained nuts, bolts, and screws, and were equipped with a hobby fuse that could be lit. Authorities are currently investigating whether the devices were functional improvised explosives or a hoax.

Mayor Mamdani’s Absence

Commissioner Tisch confirmed that Mayor Zohran Mamdani was not present at Gracie Mansion during the incident. Mamdani is the city’s first Muslim mayor.

Ongoing Investigation

The NYPD is continuing to investigate the incident, and further details are expected to be released as they become available. The incident highlights the challenges of managing protests and ensuring public safety in a city with diverse viewpoints and passionate activism.
