NYPD Officer Shot During Brooklyn Standoff; Suspect Killed
A 15-year NYPD Emergency Service Unit (ESU) officer was shot in the leg Friday during a standoff with a barricaded gunman in Brooklyn, authorities confirmed. Detective Matthew Gale, 42, sustained a tibial fracture but remains in stable condition at Kings County Hospital, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
What happened during the standoff?
The incident began at 5:45 a.m. when officers from the 79th Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting multiple shots fired at a two-story home in Bedford-Stuyvesant. The suspect, Lamin Simmons, 48, allegedly fired 20 rounds during the hours-long confrontation, according to Tisch. At 8:52 a.m., ESU officers entered the residence and encountered Simmons at the top of the stairs, who ignored orders to drop his weapon and opened fire, striking Gale, the commissioner said.
Simmons, who had no prior documented history with the NYPD, was killed after officers returned fire. Investigators recovered two weapons at the scene: a Jimenez Arms .380 caliber handgun and a Beretta handgun with an extended magazine, Tisch confirmed.
What is known about the suspect?
Simmons’ wife and son evacuated the home before the standoff and informed police of his history of mental illness, according to Tisch. An elderly couple was trapped on the upper floor of the residence, with police stating the incident originated from a dispute involving the pair. Drone footage reportedly showed Simmons wielding a handgun, and he hurled household items, including a microwave and pots, at officers in the backyard, the NYPD said.

What have officials said about the incident?
Tisch praised the ESU for handling the volatile situation, stating officers “met that danger with uncommon valor.” She emphasized the risks faced by NYPD personnel, adding, “They enter situations that are uncertain and volatile and often life-threatening.” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited Gale at the hospital, calling him “brave” and thanking first responders for their “swift action.”
What are the next steps in the investigation?
The NYPD is investigating Simmons’ mental health history and the circumstances surrounding the standoff. A full report is expected to be released in the coming days. Gale’s condition remains stable, with hospital staff noting he is “in good spirits” and expected to recover.
