Easter Weekend Weather in New Zealand: Rain for the South Island, Sunshine for Most Elsewhere

A mixed weather forecast is predicted for New Zealand over the Easter weekend, with the South Island bracing for heavy rain and much of the North Island expected to enjoy sunny skies. A heavy rain warning is currently in place for the West Coast, while other regions can anticipate varying conditions.

Heavy Rain Warning for the West Coast

An orange-level heavy rain warning has been issued by MetService for the ranges of the Westland District north of the Haast River, effective from 11pm Friday, April 3rd, 2026, for 25 hours. Between 180mm to 240mm of rain is expected, with peak rates of 20 to 30 mm/h throughout Saturday morning and afternoon, potentially extending into Sunday. 1News reports residents should clear drains and gutters, avoid low-lying areas, and drive cautiously.

Rain Watch for Canterbury Lakes

A yellow-level heavy rain watch is also in effect for the headwaters of the Canterbury Lakes and rivers south of Arthur’s Pass, lasting for 22 hours from 2am Saturday.

South Island to Bear the Brunt

Meteorologist Heather Keats of MetService indicated that the South Island would experience the most challenging weather conditions over the long weekend. “We’ve got a couple of new fronts coming up the southwest of the South Island,” Keats said. “It’s that classic behaviour, they move up over Fiordland, they travel up the West Coast. So Saturday and Sunday, not great for any outside Easter egg hunts, unless you don’t mind soggy chocolate.” 1News
