Multiple Fatal Crashes Across New Zealand Leave Four Dead, Several Injured
A series of crashes across New Zealand over the weekend and early Monday morning have resulted in four fatalities and multiple injuries. The incidents occurred in Waikato, Auckland, Southland and Taranaki, prompting investigations and traffic disruptions.
Waikato Crash Claims One Life
On Saturday night, emergency services responded to a single-vehicle crash on Howden Road in Temple View, Hamilton, at approximately 8:40 PM. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, one person died at the scene. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Police confirmed the incident on Sunday morning.
Southland Crash Results in Fatality
Another single-vehicle crash in Southland, reported around 12:40 AM on Sunday, also resulted in one death. Winding Creek Road was affected, and one person sustained moderate injuries, receiving treatment from ambulance services. The road was expected to be closed for most of the day as emergency services worked at the scene. One patient was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in serious condition.
Auckland Motorway Collision Leaves One Dead, Two Injured
In Auckland, a two-vehicle crash on the Southwestern Motorway (SH20) at Onehunga around 6:15 AM on Sunday led to one fatality and moderate injuries for two others. Police reported that lanes were blocked but have since reopened. St John responded with three ambulances, a rapid response unit, and a manager.
Invercargill Crash Involves Fleeing Driver
A driver died in a single-vehicle crash in Invercargill early Sunday morning whereas attempting to evade police. Shortly before 3:00 AM, police signaled a vehicle to stop on Kelvin Street. The driver failed to comply and fled, but the vehicle was discovered shortly after, having crashed at the intersection of Leet and Kelvin streets. One person died at the scene. The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority, standard procedure in such cases. Police are requesting anyone with CCTV footage from the area to come forward.
Other Incidents and Road Closures
Additional crashes caused disruptions elsewhere. A three-vehicle crash on Auckland’s Southern Motorway (SH1) near Ōtara blocked northbound lanes, with one person taken to Middlemore Hospital in serious condition and two others treated at the scene. A crash on Ōhura Road on SH43/Forgotten World Highway blocked the road, and motorists were advised to delay travel. SH20 was also closed between the Neilson St and Queenstown Rd off-ramps due to a separate incident.
