Severe Gales Disrupt Lower North Island: Thousands Without Power, States of Emergency Declared
A powerful storm is battering the lower North Island of Modern Zealand, leaving over 30,000 properties without power and prompting states of emergency across multiple districts. Wild winds have brought down trees and power lines, causing widespread disruption and evacuations.
Widespread Power Outages
Powerco reports approximately 23,000 properties across its network are experiencing power outages. The Wellington region is particularly affected, with around 10,000 connections cut. The Manawatū-Whanganui region has been severely impacted and is currently under a state of emergency.
Residents in Whanganui are experiencing multiple power outages, and are advised to check the Powerco website for updates: https://outages.powerco.co.nz/
Evacuations and Road Closures
Evacuations are underway for residents on Lincoln Road in Masterton due to the risk of falling trees. Wairarapa assistant commander Ian Wright stated that trees in the area are unstable, leading to road closures and the evacuation of homes. A tree has also fallen on a road between Fordell and Kauangāroa, blocking access, with contractors working to clear a path.
Travel Disruptions
Air New Zealand has cancelled flights to and from several major centers, including the capital, due to the strong winds. The airline stated that safety is their top priority and services are expected to resume when conditions improve.
States of Emergency
Five districts are currently under a state of emergency: Manawatū, Rangitīkei, Tararua, Waipā, and Ōtorohanga District.
