Fresh Zealand Woman Among Pair Charged in Sydney Airport Meth Bust

Sydney, Australia – A New Zealand woman is facing a potential life sentence after being charged with allegedly attempting to import over 38 kilograms of methamphetamine into Australia. The arrest, part of a joint operation between the Australian Border Force (ABF) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP), occurred after a targeted baggage examination at Sydney Airport on December 20, 2025.

Details of the Arrest

Australian border officials stopped two women, a 35-year-old New Zealander and a 35-year-old Australian, upon their arrival from Singapore. A subsequent search of their luggage revealed dozens of vacuum-sealed bags containing a crystalline substance hidden beneath a layer of towels. Presumptive testing confirmed the substance was methamphetamine.

Charges and Potential Penalties

Both women have been charged with one count each of importing a commercial quantity of methamphetamine, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment under Australian law. They appeared in Sydney’s Downing Centre court on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, and are due to reappear at a later date. The AFP confirmed the charges.

Official Statements

Australian Border Patrol Superintendent Elke West emphasized the ABF’s commitment to intercepting illicit drugs at the border. “Our ABF officers are seizing significant quantities of illicit drugs at the border, removing profits from the hands of criminals and stopping their corrupt business model in its tracks,” she stated. She likewise highlighted the tactics employed by organized crime groups, including exploiting vulnerable travelers.

Detective Acting Inspector Trevor Robinson of the AFP stated the organization is dedicated to maintaining a “hostile environment” for drug importers. He added that stopping the shipment prevents “immeasurable harm” to Australian families and represents a significant disruption to criminal profits.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities continue to investigate the source of the methamphetamine and any potential connections to larger criminal networks. The case underscores the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and protect Australia’s borders.
