  • RZ incorporates an updated battery, eAxle technology, and increased power.

kiwi luxury-car buyers can anticipate a taste of the future next year. Lexus New Zealand’s updated RZ EV-SUV will offer steer-by-wire technology, removing the mechanical link between the steering wheel and axles. The system transmits steering signals electronically, from actuator to actuator.

Updated RZ boasts an improved 77kWh battery and more powerful electric motors.

Steer-by-wire isn’t entirely new to the New Zealand market. Infiniti’s Direct Adaptive Steering (DAS) appeared on select NZ models starting in 2017, but those vehicles retained a conventional physical backup system.

The Lexus system represents a new generation and includes a yoke-style steering wheel. Those familiar with the 1980s TV series Knight rider will promptly recognize the design. For those unfamiliar, a viewing of Knight Rider is highly recommended.

The new RZ arrives in new Zealand late this year and will be showcased at the Auckland ASB Classic in January 2026.Lexus NZ will announce local specifications soon, but factory facts confirms steer-by-wire as standard on the top RZ 550e F Sport model.
