Czech Mobile Storage Crisis Sparks New Cloud Competition as 42 Percent Lose Memories

Forty percent of Czechs have already lost unbacked memories, according to the NMS survey, because they could not capture an important moment due to full memory on their phone or lost them when their device was lost or broken. The research, which polled 1,500 respondents aged 18 and older and was reported by Novinky, reveals that 72 percent of Czech smartphone owners regularly struggle with depleted storage capacity. Among parents of young children, 49 percent report missing critical moments because their devices lacked available space.

Telecom operator O2 has launched a dedicated cloud storage service named O2 Můj Cloud, positioning itself directly against established platform giants like Google and Apple. The move makes O2 the first domestic operator in the Czech Republic to offer native cloud backup solutions directly integrated into monthly tariff billing.

Market Pricing and Storage Tiers for O2 Můj Cloud

O2 enters the market with two distinct storage configurations designed to undercut existing competitors. The basic tier offers 300 GB of storage for 59 CZK per month, while the heavy-usage tier provides 2,000 GB, or 2 TB, for 99 CZK per month, according to reporting by MobilMania. The service provides a one-month trial period free of charge for subscribers.

By comparison, competing pricing models from major tech companies vary significantly. Google One charges 60 CZK for 100 GB, 80 CZK for 200 GB, and 299 CZK for 2 TB per month. Apple iCloud+ charges 25 CZK for 50 GB, 79 CZK for 200 GB, and 249 CZK for 2 TB per month, as detailed by E15. The aggressive pricing by O2 undercuts Google’s 2 TB tier by roughly a third and Apple’s equivalent offering by 150 CZK monthly.

However, accessing the service requires meeting a specific provider condition. Users must hold an active O2 mobile voice tariff to activate and manage the cloud storage through the Moje O2 customer application, as noted by MobilMania.

User Habits and Automated Backup Misconceptions

Despite frequent storage alerts, user behavior remains inconsistent. Only 17 percent of surveyed individuals clean out their phones regularly, while 31 percent do so occasionally. Nearly a quarter of respondents wait until the operating system displays a critical warning that no space remains for new photos or videos, according to Novinky data.

The NMS survey highlights a dangerous misconception regarding digital safety. While 28 percent of users do not back up their data simply because they do not know how, another 46 percent mistakenly assume that their files back up automatically without any manual configuration. Consequently, 42 percent of Czechs have already experienced the permanent loss of family events and photographs of their children when devices broke, were lost, or were replaced.

Physical alternatives remain common for those avoiding cloud subscription models. External USB flash drives featuring USB-C connectors with 128 GB of capacity cost approximately 450 CZK, while 1 TB external solid-state drives run around 4,000 CZK, according to Novinky. Physical backups require manual copying via a computer or compatible mobile adapter and must be updated regularly to ensure data preservation.
