Two Days of Oatmeal May Significantly Lower Cholesterol

Eating mostly oatmeal for just two days may significantly reduce cholesterol levels and positively impact gut health, according to a clinical trial from the University of Bonn published in Nature Communications. The study, focused on individuals with metabolic syndrome, revealed a 10% reduction in harmful LDL cholesterol after a short, calorie-restricted oat-based diet.

Metabolic Syndrome and Cholesterol

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions – including excess weight, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, and abnormal blood lipid levels – that increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease 1. The University of Bonn Study

Researchers at the University of Bonn conducted a study involving 32 women and men with metabolic syndrome. Participants consumed 300 grams of oatmeal three times daily for two days, limiting their calorie intake to roughly half their usual amount. A control group followed the same calorie restriction but did not consume oats 2.

While both groups experienced some benefits from calorie reduction, the oat-based diet led to a more substantial 10% decrease in LDL cholesterol. Participants also experienced modest weight loss and a slight reduction in blood pressure 3. Notably, these cholesterol benefits remained visible six weeks after the intervention.

The Role of the Gut Microbiome

The study also investigated the impact of oatmeal on the gut microbiome. Researchers found that consuming oatmeal increased the number of certain beneficial bacteria in the gut 4. These bacteria produce metabolic byproducts, including phenolic compounds like ferulic acid, which have been shown to positively influence cholesterol metabolism in animal studies. Certain microbes aid in eliminating histidine, preventing its conversion into a compound linked to insulin resistance.

Short-Term Intensive Approach vs. Moderate Intake

The study revealed that a short-term, intensive oat-based diet was more effective than a longer-term, moderate intake. A separate six-week phase where participants consumed 80 grams of oatmeal daily without additional dietary restrictions yielded only modest changes. This suggests that a concentrated, high-dose approach may be optimal for cholesterol management.

Study Methodology

The research involved 68 participants in total. The study utilized randomized controlled trials (RCTs), where participants were randomly assigned to either the oat-based intervention or a control group. While complete blinding was challenging due to the nature of the diet, laboratory teams analyzing samples were unaware of group assignments to minimize bias. Researchers collected blood and stool samples, along with measurements of blood pressure, weight, and body composition, at multiple time points throughout the study.

Looking Ahead

Researchers are now investigating whether repeating an intensive oat-based diet every six weeks can provide a sustained preventative effect against cholesterol issues and diabetes. This research builds on historical uses of oats for metabolic health, dating back to the early 20th century when German physician Carl von Noorden successfully used oats to treat patients with diabetes.
