Samsung Galaxy’s Ocean Mode and Coral Reef Initiative Receive International Recognition Samsung Electronics has received international recognition for its “Coral in Focus” initiative, which uses the Ocean Mode feature on select Galaxy mobile phones to support coral reef conservation. The initiative was awarded Gold in the “Best Sustainability or Conservation Initiative” category at Engage for Excellent’s 2026 Halo Awards. The documentary “Coral in Focus,” tied to the initiative, received the Coastal and Island Culture Award at the 23rd International Ocean Film Festival. Samsung was also named to Rapid Company’s 2026 Most Innovative Companies list for its work advancing mobile innovation in environmental research. Ocean Mode is an advanced camera feature available through the Expert RAW app on newer Galaxy mobile phones. It enables researchers and communities to capture high-quality underwater data for reef monitoring and coral reef restoration. The feature includes automatic color correction through white balance control, which helps bring out the true colors of underwater scenes. By transforming Galaxy devices into tools for ocean conservation, Samsung is supporting efforts to reverse the decline of coral reefs in partnership with U.S.-based nonprofit organization Seatrees and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. These recognitions highlight Samsung’s commitment to using mobile technology as a scalable tool for sustainability and environmental research under its broader initiative, “Our Journey: Galaxy for the Planet.” Coral reefs, which cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, support approximately 25% of all marine life and sustain the livelihoods of millions worldwide. Without intervention, many reefs are at risk of disappearing due to climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Samsung’s Ocean Mode and Coral in Focus initiative aim to provide accessible, high-quality imaging capabilities to aid in the preservation of these vital ecosystems.
