Utah State University’s College of Arts & Sciences has unveiled a packed October calendar featuring exhibitions, performances, workshops, and guest lectures across its Logan campus and community venues. The schedule highlights student and faculty talent alongside public academic events designed to engage both the university and the wider Cache Valley community.
Exhibitions at Tippetts & Eccles Galleries and ReadyMade Gallery
Visual arts anchor much of the early-month schedule at the Chase Fine Arts Center. The Tippetts & Eccles Galleries hosted an exhibition running from September 8 through October 2, welcoming visitors Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with shortened weekend-adjacent hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 1 and 2. Later in the month, the galleries launch a new exhibition running from October 12 through November 13 on the same weekday schedule, sponsored by the USU Ceramics Guild, the Art & Design Department, and the College of Arts and Sciences.
Off-campus, the Latinx Art Exhibition runs from October 1 through October 3 at 28 W. Center St., showcasing Cache Valley artists exploring the American experience. Following that display, the ReadyMade Gallery at the same downtown Logan address hosts a consecutive exhibition from October 7 through November 7, open Wednesday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Guest Lectures, Faculty Series, and Academic Workshops
Academic discussions begin on October 1 when folklorist and media scholar Andrew Peck speaks on folklore’s intersection with social media and fake news. The lecture takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in Room 101 of the Merrill-Cazier Library.
Professional development takes center stage on October 2 as the Transforming Communities Institute hosts an interactive morning event for faculty, staff, and students at the Eccles Conference Center Auditorium from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. For social work professionals, the Department of Social Work provides an 8-hour synchronous training on October 3 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., accessible across Logan, Tooele, Price, and via Zoom for licensed mental health practitioners providing clinical supervision.
Rounding out the academic slate, the Faculty-in-Focus signature series meets on October 7 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 201 of the Mehdi Heravi Global Teaching and Learning Center to celebrate faculty research and teaching excellence. Weekly biology presentations are scheduled in Room 207 of the Life Sciences Building every Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.
Concerts, Theater Productions, and Performances
Music and theater performances fill the university’s performance halls throughout the month. On October 1 at 7:30 p.m., the Daines Concert Hall hosts “Autumn Voices,” featuring combined choirs from the USU Music Department performing seasonal favorites and a cappella masterworks. The Morgan Theater presents an ancient Greek comedy exploring a fictional trial of Euripides for crimes against women in his plays, with performances scheduled for October 2, 3, 5, and 7 at 7:30 p.m., plus a 1 p.m. matinee on October 3.
A guest trio known for inventive global programming performs on October 5 at 7:30 p.m., with a strict policy barring children under eight years old. On October 7 at 7:30 p.m., the USU big band concert takes the stage, featuring an opening jazz ensemble and a closing jazz orchestra performing traditional big band arrangements. The Daines Concert Hall returns on October 14 at 7:30 p.m. with a symphonic program anchored by Antonín Dvořák’s “From the New World” symphony.
Community Engagement and Language Workshops
Language practice and informal community gatherings round out the October calendar. The USU Spanish Club hosts beginner-friendly Danza Folklórica Workshops on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Room 215 of the HPER Building, exploring traditional South American dances. For casual conversation, the Mehdi Heravi Global Teaching and Learning Center hosts Spanish game and chat hours on Monday afternoons starting at 4:30 p.m. Finally, Dean Joe Ward invites students to a study break featuring free coffee and hot chocolate at “Cup of Joe with Joe” on October 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Biology & Natural Resources Building.
