Ohio State Coach Anticipated Headset Issues During Michigan Game

Updated Dec. 3, 2025, 5:35 p.m. ET

Ohio state coach Ryan day said he suspected Ohio State would lose headset communication during last Saturday’s 27-9 win over Michigan. He shared this with local reporters on Tuesday.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Buckeyes did lose headset communication. Quarterback Julian Sayin had to meet with Day on the sideline to get the next play call. Communication was later restored.

“The Conference was notified of the Ohio State coaches’ headset failure during the game by the on-field officiating crew,” Paul Kennedy, Big Ten vice president of communications, said in an email to The Detroit News on Wednesday. “Coaches’ headsets are managed by each school. Ohio State quickly found the problem and fixed it, which was a power supply issue. The Big Ten isn’t aware of any ongoing headset or power supply problems at Michigan Stadium.”

Day explained to reporters that he thought “something like that may happen” last week. He added that it’s vital to have backup plans for any big game. Ohio State had a wristband plan, and Sayin was prepared to come to the sideline.

“I was in here (last) Friday, and some of the guys and staff looked at me strangely. Like, ‘Why would you think that would happen?'” Day said. “I don’t know. We just have to be ready for anything.”
