Ohio Suspends Gas Tax For 90 Days To Lower Pump Prices

Drivers across Ohio experienced an overnight drop in fuel costs as the state began temporarily removing its gas tax on Sunday. The legislative change lowered regular gasoline prices by 38.5 cents per gallon and diesel by 47 cents, providing immediate relief at local pumps, according to wkbn.com reported.

Governor Mike DeWine signed the legislation into law on Thursday, setting a 90-day suspension of the state tax. The policy took effect at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, prompting gas stations throughout the state to adjust their electronic pricing and pump displays.

Drivers Cross State Lines For Lower Ohio Prices

At a gas station in Masury located just off Route 62 and less than half a mile from the Pennsylvania border, motorists formed long lines of cars waiting to access the pumps on Sunday morning. Local commuters traveling from neighboring Pennsylvania communities reported altering their daily routes to take advantage of the sudden price disparity.

“Since we’re so close to the Pennsylvania line, it’s easier to come over here,” Hermitage resident Shawn Patterson told wkbn.com. Patterson noted that regular gasoline at the Ohio pump dropped to $3.69, while a station located five minutes away across the state line in Pennsylvania remained priced a dollar higher.

Lawmakers estimate the temporary tax elimination will save motorists between $3 and $7 on a standard fill-up. West Middlesex resident Kim Hartle expressed support for the measure while speaking with reporters at the Masury station, stating that the price reduction offers a welcome financial break for local households.
