Iran-US Conflict Escalates: Oil Prices Surge Amidst Intensified Strikes

The conflict between the United States and Iran continues to escalate, sending shockwaves through global energy markets. President Donald Trump has claimed the US has “won” the war, but continues to state the necessitate to “finish the job,” even as fighting intensifies and concerns grow about wider regional destabilization. Oil prices have surged as the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transport, faces increasing disruption.

Trump Claims Victory Amidst Ongoing Strikes

Speaking to supporters in Kentucky on Wednesday, President Trump asserted that the US had achieved victory in the conflict, stating, “We have won. Within the first hour – then it was over.” However, he simultaneously emphasized the necessity of completing the operation, stating, “The oil price will go down, but we cannot abandon early.”

Disruption to Oil Supply and IEA Intervention

The war has led to a near closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil consumption is transported. This disruption has caused a significant spike in oil prices. In response, the International Energy Agency (IEA) announced plans to release 400 million barrels of oil from reserves in an attempt to stabilize the market. While the initial announcement caused a temporary dip in prices, they have since rebounded.

Escalating Military Actions

The US military has reported destroying Iranian mine-laying vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Initial reports indicated the destruction of 16 vessels, but President Trump later claimed 31 mine vessels had been eliminated. These actions followed warnings about Iran placing mines in the crucial waterway. Three ships were reportedly attacked in the strait, with Iran claiming responsibility for one of the incidents.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Central Command stated it had “eliminated” 16 Iranian mine-laying vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, describing the day as “the most intense day of strikes inside Iran.”

Regional Concerns and Further Strikes

Explosions were reported near Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport on Wednesday, coinciding with new Israeli military strikes on the city. A suspected Iranian drone also struck a US diplomatic facility in Iraq, indicating Iran’s retaliatory actions against US and Israeli operations.

Oil Prices and Market Reaction

As of 10:30 p.m. On Wednesday, the price of oil (Brent spot) reached $93.45 per barrel, up from $92.88 per barrel, representing a rise of $3.45 since 3:20 p.m.
