Rachel Arditi Ignites Stage in ‘Olympes,’ a Musical Tribute to Olympe de Gouges
A new musical, Olympes, starring Rachel Arditi, is currently captivating audiences with its vibrant portrayal of feminist icon Olympe de Gouges. Co-written with director Justine Heynemann, the production blends historical drama with contemporary musical elements, sparking conversations about women’s rights and artistic expression.
A Life Dedicated to Equality
Olympe de Gouges, born Marie Gouze, was a pioneering French playwright and political activist who championed women’s rights during the French Revolution. She is best known for writing the “Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen” in 1791, a direct response to the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.” Despite facing societal resistance and censorship, de Gouges continued to advocate for equality through her writings, and activism. She was eventually guillotined on November 4, 1793, during the Reign of Terror.
Olympes: A Modern Take on a Historical Figure
Olympes, conceived by Justine Heynemann and Rachel Arditi, brings de Gouges’ story to life through a dynamic blend of theater and music. The production explores the challenges de Gouges faced in having her voice heard as a female playwright and activist. It highlights her unwavering commitment to fighting for the rights of women, even in the face of adversity. The show incorporates songs by contemporary female composers, bridging the gap between the 18th century and the present day.
Collaboration and Creative Vision
Arditi and Heynemann previously collaborated on Think of Sweetness (2022) and PUNK.E, another feminist-inspired work. Olympes features a cast of ten performers who act, sing, and play music, creating a lively and immersive experience for the audience. The costumes, designed by Julia Brochier, blend historical and modern elements. The production incorporates historical figures like Marie-Antoinette, Madame de Lamballe, and Robespierre, alongside musical references to artists like Françoise Hardy and Johnny Hallyday.

Olympes is currently on tour, with performances scheduled in Nogent-sur-Marne (March 13), Argenteuil (March 17), and Montauban (March 20). The tour continues through April 29, with a run at La Scala Provence in July. The show is recommended for audiences aged 13 and up.
