OMERS posted a 4.8% net return for the first half of the year, driven largely by public equity investments that helped expand the pension fund manager’s net assets by $6.9 billion to reach $151.6 billion by June 30, according to the fund. The Ontario-based pension manager oversees defined-benefit retirement plans for municipal employees, school boards, transit workers, and emergency services across the province.

Public Equities Drive First-Half Performance

All asset classes generated positive contributions during the first six months of the year, but shares in publicly traded companies led the overall gains, according to OMERS chief financial and strategy officer Jonathan Simmons. The fund’s total net assets climbed from the start of the year to $151.6 billion at the end of June. Over the past decade, OMERS has added more than $78 billion to its pension plan portfolio.

Investment Strategy and Domestic Focus

OMERS deployed $1 billion into Canadian equities during the first half of the year as part of a strategy to expand domestic holdings across multiple sectors. Simmons noted that Canada holds considerable potential for future capital deployment. Domestic assets currently account for roughly a quarter of the fund’s total holdings, while approximately half remain concentrated in the United States.
