Ondo Finance operates a $4 billion platform that bridges traditional financial assets with blockchain technology, offering short-dated US Treasuries, equities, and ETFs as tokens. However, ordinary investors searching for the project often confuse its tokenized financial products with its freely tradable governance token, ONDO, which traded at $0.4133 (0.3689 euros).
Tokenized Assets Versus the ONDO Governance Token
The platform separates its real-world assets from its governance infrastructure. Ondo manages around $4 billion in tokenized products, including USDY, OUSG, and Ondo Stocks. Behind the ONDO token stands the Ondo Foundation, a non-profit foundation company established in the Cayman Islands in 2022 with no beneficial owners.
The ONDO token does not represent a share in the platform’s $4 billion portfolio of bonds and equities. Instead, it functions as a governance token through which holders have rights that relate to Flux Finance, a lending protocol. Buying the ONDO token provides voting rights for that lending protocol rather than a direct claim on product earnings.

Retail Access Restrictions Across the European Economic Area
European retail investors face regulatory barriers when attempting to access Ondo’s core asset products. According to the platform’s eligibility criteria, retail clients across the European Economic Area (EEA)—including Germany—cannot subscribe, mint, or redeem USDY or tokenized equities unless they qualify as professional clients or qualified investors.
To meet the professional client threshold under MiFID II regulations, individuals must satisfy at least two of three conditions: holding a financial portfolio of 500,000 euros, executing ten significant transactions per quarter over the preceding four quarters, or possessing one year of professional experience in the financial sector. Consequently, ordinary retail investors in Germany can only trade the separate ONDO governance token on crypto exchanges rather than the underlying tokenized bonds and equities.
Product Breakdown and the British Virgin Islands Structure
Ondo publishes rolling figures for its primary offerings, which totaled approximately $4.0 billion as of October 24. The lineup includes USDY at $2.37 billion, a yieldcoin secured by short-dated US Treasuries, units in the iShares Short Treasury Bond ETF, or bank deposits offering a 3.75 percent annual yield. Ondo Stocks accounts for $1.33 billion across more than 450 assets with roughly 257,100 holders, while OUSG holds $319.38 million in institutional short-dated Treasuries.
Because the issuer is based in the British Virgin Islands, dividends from US companies incur a 30 percent withholding tax before reinvestment, a rate higher than the 15 percent applied to German private investors under the US-Germany double taxation treaty.
ONDO Token Trades Across 69 Venues
Meanwhile, the ONDO governance token trades across 69 venues, featuring euro pairs on eight exchanges including Kraken, Bitvavo, OKX, and Bybit, while remaining absent from Bitpanda. Market capitalization for the ERC-20 token stood at $2.01 billion on October 24, with 4.87 billion tokens in circulation out of a total supply of 10 billion.
