A Screenless Presence for the Smart Home
OpenAI is moving beyond the screen, developing a portable smart speaker designed to function as a home-based AI companion. According to a report from Bloomberg, the device aims to transcend standard voice-command utility by utilizing “mechanical elements” to create a lifelike presence within the home.
Redefining the AI Computer
The device is intended to serve as a central hub for media playback, smart-home management, and direct interaction with ChatGPT’s underlying models. The company is currently positioning the device as a foundational “new type of computer for the AI era.”

Defending Against Apple Litigation
This hardware push arrives alongside heightened legal friction with Apple. Apple has characterized these instances as only the “tip of the iceberg.”
In response, sources familiar with OpenAI’s internal planning told Bloomberg that the company believes its hardware initiatives “veer significantly” from Apple’s existing product lineup. Consequently, OpenAI officials maintain that their development path is unlikely to infringe upon Apple’s protected intellectual property.
A Roadmap for Wearables and Beyond
OpenAI’s hardware ambitions extend well beyond a single home device. The company is linked to several categories currently in the pipeline:
- Smartphone Partnerships: OpenAI is exploring collaborations with component manufacturers, including MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare.
- Design Collaborations: The company has engaged in high-profile design discussions, notably with former Apple designer Jony Ive.
Market analysts suggest that OpenAI could have as many as five distinct hardware products in various stages of research and development by the end of 2028.
Legal Hurdles in the Hardware Sector
The sector remains a contentious space. In April 2025, Ziff Davis, the parent company of CNET, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging copyright infringement related to the training and operation of its AI systems.
OpenAI has not provided a formal comment regarding its specific hardware release schedule or the ongoing litigation. The company’s ability to successfully transition from a software-first model to a hardware-integrated consumer brand remains a primary focus for industry observers as these projects move from the laboratory toward potential production.
