OpenAI Expands Dublin Presence with New EMEA Headquarters

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is significantly expanding its Dublin-based workforce and plans to establish a new European, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) headquarters in the city. The company is currently evaluating two potential locations to accommodate over 400 workers.

Strategic Location and Growth

Dublin has become a key hub for technology companies, and OpenAI’s decision to expand its presence underscores the city’s attractiveness. Currently employing 60 people in Dublin across various departments including engineering, go-to-market strategy, privacy, user operations, finance, and HR, OpenAI is actively recruiting for an additional 18 roles, including account directors within its sales team. The Irish Times reports that the company recently appointed Sanj Bhayro as its head of sales for the EMEA hub, a move seen as a significant investment outside of the United States.

Potential Headquarters Locations

OpenAI is considering two prime locations for its new EMEA headquarters: College Square and the Tropical Fruit Warehouse.

  • College Square: Developed by Marlet Property Group, College Square already hosts Workday’s European headquarters, with Workday having secured all 38,648 sq m (416,000 sq ft) of the “super-prime” office space. Marlet Property Group has established itself as a leading property developer in Ireland, focused on creating sustainable and inspiring urban spaces.
  • Tropical Fruit Warehouse: This location, developed by Iput on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, was previously intended for expansion by TikTok. However, TikTok shifted its plans in September 2024, consolidating its Dublin operations at its European headquarters in the Sorting Office.

Previous Interest and Shifting Plans

Prior to OpenAI’s interest, both TikTok and Three Ireland had considered the Tropical Fruit Warehouse as potential headquarters locations. However, TikTok ultimately opted for a different location, and a potential deal with Three Ireland was reportedly place on hold due to acquisition talks involving Liberty Global. Le Derniere Heure details these shifting plans, highlighting the competitive landscape for prime office space in Dublin.

OpenAI’s Global Ambitions

Led by CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI is backed by significant investment, including a 27% stake held by Microsoft. The company’s expansion in Dublin, led by Emma Redmond, Head of EU Privacy, demonstrates its commitment to the EMEA region and its long-term growth strategy. OpenAI states its belief in the potential of artificial intelligence to create opportunities worldwide and views its Dublin office as crucial to supporting these efforts.
