OpenAI’s ChatGPT Ad Business Hits $1 Billion Revenue Run Rate

OpenAI reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate for its ChatGPT advertising business on Monday, August 31, roughly 200 days after launching tests in the United States, according to reports from CNBC and Reuters. The milestone arrives as the artificial intelligence company prepares for a potential initial public offering and works to justify its $852 billion valuation to investors.

Global Expansion and Self-Service Access

ChatGPT Ads are now available in more than 40 countries, according to company statements cited by CNBC. On Monday, OpenAI rolled out self-service access for advertisers across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa through its Ads Manager tool. Reuters reported that small- and medium-sized businesses now represent a material share of the ads business, aided by the accessibility of the Ads Manager platform.

Ads currently appear for users on the free tier—which makes up the vast majority of the platform’s 1 billion weekly active users—and the lower-priced Go plan. In April, OpenAI reported that its U.S. ads pilot crossed $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks of launch. While the $1 billion run rate marks rapid early adoption, Emarketer AI analyst Nate Elliott noted to Reuters that the figure indicates the company is falling short of its internal $2.5 billion advertising revenue target for 2026.

Data Privacy and Market Competition

OpenAI maintains that ads are clearly labeled and do not influence the answers generated by ChatGPT. According to CNBC, advertisers do not have access to private user conversations. The push into digital advertising places OpenAI in direct competition with established tech giants such as Alphabet’s Google and Meta, both of which generate hundreds of billions of dollars annually in ad revenue.

The monetization strategy has also drawn scrutiny from industry rivals. Anthropic previously made OpenAI’s ad push the focus of its Super Bowl campaign, ridiculing the decision to introduce sponsored content into conversational AI. Despite competitor pushback and valuation pressures, OpenAI continues to build out its advertising ecosystem alongside existing revenue engines like enterprise offerings, consumer subscriptions, and usage-based application programming interfaces.

Next Steps for the Advertising Platform

Looking ahead, OpenAI stated that its next growth phase will introduce additional ad formats, campaign objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities. The company also plans to explore new native ways for businesses to interact with consumers within the chatbot interface as global market rollouts continue ahead of an expected public offering.
