Opterion Health Enrolls First Patient in Phase 1 SPARC Trial for Novel Peritoneal Dialysis Therapy

MUTTENZ, Switzerland – February 23, 2026 – Opterion Health AG today announced the successful enrollment of the first patient in its Phase 1 SPARC (Safety, Pharmacokinetics, and Renal Care) trial. This marks a significant milestone in the clinical development of OPT101, a non-glucose-based osmotic agent designed to transform peritoneal dialysis (PD) treatment for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The initiation of the trial follows recent Clinical Trial Application (CTA) approval from European health authorities. Source

Addressing Unmet Needs in Peritoneal Dialysis

For over three decades, patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis have relied on glucose-based solutions. Even as effective, these solutions can lead to metabolic distress, insulin spikes, weight gain, and glucose toxicity, potentially contributing to the deterioration of the peritoneal membrane over time. Source OPT101 aims to address these long-standing challenges by offering a non-glucose-based alternative.

What is the SPARC Trial?

The Phase 1 SPARC trial is designed to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of OPT101 across a range of concentrations. The study will involve controlled day and night dwell cycles and will as well collect patient-reported outcomes to assess their experience with the new therapy. Source The data gathered from this trial will be crucial in guiding the next stages of development and ultimately determining the potential of OPT101 to replace glucose-based solutions in PD.

Statements from Opterion Health Leadership

“First patient enrolled is a powerful and motivating moment for the entire organization,” said Peter Reinemer, Chief Executive Officer of Opterion Health AG. “For more than three decades, patients on peritoneal dialysis have had to rely on glucose-based solutions that come with significant compromises. With OPT101, we are determined to grant patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) better options. Today’s milestone proves we are well on our way.” Source

Maxim Voropaiev, Chief Medical Officer, added: “First patient in gives us the clinical starting point we necessitate. SPARC will tell us how OPT101 behaves, how patients experience it, and how we should shape future phases. Everything we learn from this study moves us closer to offering a therapy that reduces metabolic burden and supports longer-lasting, more patient-friendly PD care.” Source
