PHOENIX — David L. Parker, OD, an optometric practice owner and former Mississippi state senator, was named optometrist of the year at Optometry’s Meeting, according to Healio. The American Optometric Association (AOA) Excellence Awards, presented during the event’s opening session, also honored Douglas Morrow, OD, with the Distinguished Service Award and the nonprofit iSee Ohio with the Apollo Award for public service.
Who Won the Optometrist of the Year Award?
David L. Parker, owner of Olive Branch Eyecare and Horn Lake Eyecare in Mississippi, received the Optometrist of the Year Award. Parker, who served as a Mississippi state senator from 2012 to 2026, credited his legislative work in advancing optometry’s scope of practice as a career highlight. “One of my proudest accomplishments was helping write the language for Mississippi’s scope enhancement legislation,” he said. He also emphasized his role as a mentor to students and his family’s continued involvement in the field, noting that one of his sons is a third-year student at Southern College of Optometry.

What Recognition Did Douglas Morrow Receive?
Douglas Morrow, OD, a long-time optometrist in Auburn, Indiana, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. The honor recognized his decades of leadership in healthcare and community service. Morrow, who has served as president of the Indiana Optometric Association and the Indiana Optometry Board, described his volunteer work as a core part of his professional identity. “It’s hard for me not to raise my hand and volunteer,” he said. He also highlighted his role on the American Medical Association’s CPT Editorial Panel, where he collaborated with professionals from multiple health disciplines to standardize medical billing codes.

The nonprofit iSee Ohio, which provides free in-school eye exams to children who fail vision screenings, received the Apollo Award. The organization, supported by the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, ensures children receive necessary eyewear and follow-up care. Michael Earley, OD, PhD, vice president of iSee Ohio’s board, called the award “a testament to what can be accomplished when organizations unite around a common goal.” The group also runs the Realeyes program, which educates Ohio students about eye health through classroom initiatives.
