Orri Thorkelsson Signs With VfL Gummersbach Until 2029
Der VfL Gummersbach handball club signed Icelandic national team player Orri Thorkelsson from Sporting CP Lisbon on a contract running until 2029, handball-world.news reported. The 27-year-old left wing will join the Bundesliga side ahead of the upcoming season, a move that requires long-serving player Milos Vujovic to depart the club.
Coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson on the New Signing
VfL Gummersbach coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson recruited his fellow countryman. “With Orri, we are getting a slightly younger player with Champions League experience from Sporting, whom I naturally know very well as an Icelandic person,” Sigurdsson stated regarding the transfer.
Thorkelsson expressed enthusiasm about making the jump to the German Bundesliga. “I had a very wonderful time at Sporting, where I grew a lot both as a person and as an athlete and we achieved many great successes together,” Thorkelsson said. “Now I felt it was a good time in my career to take the next step forward and face a new challenge.”

Milos Vujovic Departs Gummersbach
Thorkelsson’s arrival on the left wing directly impacts the roster construction, displacing Milos Vujovic. “I am very grateful for everything we have experienced together over the years and especially for the support of the fans,” Vujovic said in a club statement. “I look forward to enjoying this final season together and giving everything until the very end.”
Thorkelsson began his professional career at Haukar Hafnarfjörður in Iceland, spent two seasons with Norwegian club Elverum from 2021 to 2023, and subsequently moved to Sporting CP Lisbon. He debuted for the Iceland senior national team in 2020 against Lithuania and has since become a regular squad member, featuring in both the 2025 World Men’s Handball Championship and the 2026 European Men’s Handball Championship.
