Yale Career, Family Life, and Retirement in Florida
Murphy worked for more than 30 years at Yale University before retiring in 1998. Following his retirement, he spent 20 years enjoying a community of fellow retirees in Destin, Florida, alongside his wife, Judy Smith, whom he married in 2003. An avid outdoorsman and cook, Murphy was known for remodeling a bedroom off his kitchen into a pantry to support his love for entertaining. The Murphy family spent vacations sailing, clamming, and attending Cape Cod League baseball games in Cockle Cove. In later years, he took up skiing and golf, recently celebrating when his grandson Jackson broke 40 for nine holes. He also maintained an active routine at the YMCA, where he worked out and gardened, often canning vegetables and making pesto to share with others.
