The Oscars Recognize Casting Directors with Fresh Award
The 98th Academy Awards, set to take place on March 15, 2026, will introduce a new competitive category: Best Casting. This marks the first addition to the Oscars since the Best Animated Feature Film category was created in 2001, finally acknowledging the crucial role casting directors play in filmmaking.
A Long-Overdue Recognition
For decades, casting directors have advocated for recognition within the Academy Awards. Richard Hicks, governor of the casting directors’ branch, expressed the sentiment of the community, stating, “We’re finally at the moment where casting is recognized as a craft alongside all the others…It’s something the casting community has been hoping for 30 years.”1 The Casting Directors Branch, established in 2013 with nearly 160 members, spearheaded the effort to bring this award to fruition.2
The 2026 Nominees
The inaugural nominees for the Academy Award for Achievement in Casting are:
- Nina Gold for Hamnet
- Jennifer Venditti for Marty Supreme
- Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another
- Gabriel Domingues for The Secret Agent
- Francine Maisler for Sinners
The Evolution of Casting Credit
While casting directors have long been essential to the filmmaking process, formal recognition was sluggish to arrive. Lynn Stalmaster received the first film credit for a casting director in 1968, for his function on The Thomas Crown Affair.3 He later received an honorary Academy Award in 2016. Canadian casting director Deirdre Bowen notes that consistent credit for casting directors didn’t become standard practice until the 1990s.3 Other awards shows, like the Canadian Screen Awards, have recognized casting for film since 2021 and for television since 2013.
What Does the Job Entail?
Casting directors do more than simply “push paper,” as some have historically perceived the role. Erica A. Hart, a member of the Casting Society’s board of directors, describes her work as that of a “detective,” constantly searching for talent at festivals, and showcases.3 Deirdre Bowen emphasizes the importance of casting in shaping a story, explaining that a casting director’s job is to present directors with actors who can embody characters and influence the narrative.
How Will the Award Be Judged?
The Academy’s casting branch initially shortlisted 10 films with exceptional casting. These films then advanced to a “bake-off” where casting directors submitted written statements and five-minute highlight reels. The branch members then narrowed the field to the five official nominees. The final decision rests with the Academy’s voting members.3
The Frontrunner and the Intangibles
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, leading the nominations with a record-breaking 16 nods, is widely considered the frontrunner for the award.4 However, unconventional casting choices in films like Hamnet, The Secret Agent, and Marty Supreme have also garnered praise. As Bowen puts it, the winning cast must simply “work.”3
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will be held on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.4
