The emergency services went to an apartment block on Rødtvet in Oslo on Saturday evening after receiving a report of a fire.

The police later wrote in the police log that it was a pram that caught fire in a stairwell. “Obviously rigged,” they added in the message.

Operations manager Øyvind Hammervold clarifies to NRK that this is a hypothesis, and that at the present time they cannot rule out that the fire may have started in other ways.

– There is an investigation at the site which has given some indications of that, but again, there could be other reasons, so we have to keep our eyes open, says Hammervold to NRK at 00.45 on Sunday night.

The police are not looking for suspects, he says.

Residents evacuated

Residents began evacuating themselves. Several were evacuated with the fire service’s high-altitude emergency response, says the operations manager.

12 people have been transported to the emergency department and hospital for examinations, “primarily in connection with smoke inhalation”, according to the police.

– No one appears seriously injured, they add.

At 23.08, the police updated that the fire had been extinguished, but that there was still some smoke in the hallway.

– The health service is still on the scene and is working on any injuries. No serious injuries have been reported, says Hammervold.

Many are not allowed to move home tonight

The evacuees are cared for at a nearby school.

– There are also municipal resources that map the need for alternative accommodation.

It is unclear how many will not be allowed to move back home tonight, but the operations manager says it is probably “several”.
