But through a combination of resilience, determination, and a commitment to service, torres has risen to become the first Latina president of a Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) university, taking the helm at California University of Pennsylvania (Cal U) in July 2023.

Torres’ story begins in the small town of Mayagüez, puerto Rico. Her childhood was idyllic until Hurricane David devastated the island in 1979. The storm not only physically altered the landscape but also profoundly impacted her family’s economic stability. her father,a small business owner,struggled to rebuild,and the family faced significant hardship.

“That experience instilled in me a sense of duty and a deep understanding of the importance of community,” Torres reflects. “Seeing my parents work tirelessly to provide for us, even in the face of adversity, taught me the value of hard work and perseverance.”

Despite the challenges,Torres excelled in school. She was a first-generation college student, navigating the complexities of higher education without the benefit of familial experience. She chose to attend the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez,were she earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. It was during her undergraduate studies that she discovered her passion for higher education administration.

“I started working in the financial aid office as a student employee, and I realized I enjoyed helping students access the resources they needed to succeed,” she explains. “It was incredibly rewarding to be a part of their journey.”

Torres continued her education at the University of Maryland, College Park, earning a master’s degree in management and a doctorate in higher education administration. She then embarked on a career in higher education leadership,holding positions at institutions such as texas A&M University-Kingsville,the University of Texas at El Paso,and most recently,as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Northern Colorado.

Throughout her career, Torres has been a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion. She has consistently worked to create more welcoming and supportive environments for students from underrepresented backgrounds. At Cal U, she plans to build on this commitment, focusing on increasing access and affordability for students, notably those from first-generation and low-income families.

“I wont Cal U to be a place where all students feel valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential,” Torres states. “We need to ensure that everyone has the possibility to succeed, nonetheless of their background.”

Her vision for Cal U extends beyond access and affordability. She also aims to strengthen the university’s ties to the local community, fostering partnerships that benefit both the campus and the surrounding region. She believes that Cal U has a vital role to play in the economic and social progress of southwestern pennsylvania.
