John Smith Wrestling Facility Receives Transformational Gift From OSU Alumni
Oklahoma State University announced a major financial gift from alumni A.J. and Susan Jacques on Thursday, advancing the timeline for construction of the new John Smith Wrestling Facility. Athletic director Chad Weiberg stated that the contribution ensures the wrestling program remains on track for development and maintains its historical standing in the NCAA.
Facility Design and Construction Details
The upcoming complex will span 16,000 square feet on the north side of Gallagher-Iba Arena. Blueprints for the structure feature more than 10,000 square feet of dedicated mat space alongside modern meeting rooms, administrative offices, and specialized areas for cardio and weight training. The facility is intended to support both the varsity Oklahoma State wrestling roster and athletes training with the Cowboy Regional Training Center.
Program Leadership Perspective on the New Complex
Head coach David Taylor emphasized the strategic importance of the upgrade for athlete development. OSU officials confirmed that the Oklahoma A&M Colleges Board of Regents granted final approval for the project last December, and the facility’s naming honors John Smith, a six-time Olympian, two-time national champion, and long-time coach of the Cowboys.
“We want Oklahoma State to be the premier training destination for anyone in pursuit of greatness, whether it be in folkstyle or freestyle,” David Taylor said.
