Overwatch Season 5 Adds Support Sombra, Roadhog Rework, and Vampire Hero Doctrine

Blizzard Entertainment announced major roster shifts and a new vampire-inspired hero for Overwatch during the BlizzCon Opening Ceremony on September 12, 2026. The updates, slated to launch with Season 5 on October 6, 2026, include moving Sombra from the Damage role to Support, giving Roadhog a defensive Tank rework, and introducing Doctrine, a new vampire-themed Support character.

Doctrine Joins the Roster as Overwatch’s First Vampire-Inspired Support

Players can test the character immediately through a limited Hero Trial running from September 12 through September 14, 2026, across all platforms. Doctrine’s character model shifts dynamically during matches, transitioning from a gaunt appearance into a sleek form mid-combat.

  • Eternal Scepter: A mid-range primary weapon that simultaneously heals allies and damages enemies from a single attack input. Infusing the weapon fires a larger, piercing blast.
  • Shrouded Momentum: A horizontal dash featuring built-in damage reduction. When Infused, it converts into full three-dimensional free-flight.
  • Invigorating Drones: Deploys mechanical bat drones to grant an ally attack speed and healing. Infusing the drones simultaneously buffs Doctrine.
  • Deliverance: An ultimate ability that launches a drone swarm to reduce enemies’ maximum health.

In the game’s lore, Doctrine is held captive in Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a volcanic Icelandic prison. Doomfist enlists Sombra, Widowmaker, and Reaper to stage a jailbreak, setting up the conclusion of the Reign of Talon story arc in Season 5.

Sombra Shifts to Support Role in Season 5

The rework retains her hacking and stealth identity while adding direct healing capabilities for teammates.

  • Machine Pistol: A short-range automatic weapon retained from her original kit.
  • Hotfix: Heals an ally over time while briefly hacking health packs and enemy deployables.
  • Cyberspace: Launches an explosive projectile that creates a zone weakening enemies and healing allies.
  • Translocator: Throws a teleportation beacon that leaves Sombra stealthed for a short period.
  • EMP: Deals damage based on a percentage of current enemy health, hacks targets, and destroys barriers.

New support-focused perks include Life Hack, which applies Hotfix to nearby allies when using EMP, and Cybersecurity, which doubles Cyberspace healing on targets below half health.

Roadhog Gains Defensive Projectile Absorption

While keeping his core Scrap Gun and Chain Hook abilities, Blizzard added tools to help him protect the team directly.

  • Trash Compactor: Absorbs incoming enemy projectiles and compresses them into an explosive ball of scrap.
  • Take a Breather: Heals Roadhog and reduces incoming damage, with the Hogdrogen Exposure perk allowing it to heal nearby allies as well.
  • Chain Hook and Whole Hog: Retain their original mechanics, with perks like Scrap Hook reloading ammo on successful hooks and Here, Piggy Piggy reducing hook cooldowns during his ultimate.

The Season 5 update, including Doctrine, the Sombra role switch, the Roadhog rework, and the Watchpoint: Grímsvötn map, arrives on October 6, 2026.
